Las raíces de Pokémon se encuentran en los años '70, de la mano de un coleccionista de insectos llamado Satoshi Tajiri, Satoshi, para ese momento, ya tenía acumulado muchísimos insectos y pequeñas criaturas, él amaba a los bichos. De hecho, sus amigos lo llamaban "Dr. Insecto".

Pero, al igual que sus amigos de seis patas, el Dr. Insecto evolucionó.

A comienzos de los '80, Satoshi desarrolló una nueva pasión: los videojuegos. Pasaba tanto tiempo en ello que una vez, en un local, le regalaron una máquina con el juego "Invasores del Espacio" para llevarse a casa.

Recuerda que el original Entertainment System no salió hasta 1985, asi que si querías jugar, indefectiblemente, debías ir a los videojuegos. En 1982, Satoshi con unos amigos, emezaron a publicar una revista llamada "GameFreak". Hemos visto ese nombre estampado en algunos productos de Pokémon y, sin duda, muchos nos hemos preguntado que era. Ahora, ya sabes, era una revista sobre videojuegos. GameFreak publicaba datos, estrategias y claves para superar niveles.

Cuando los Game Boy de Nintendo llegaron al mercado en 1990, Satoshi y sus compañeros compraron una para diseñar su propio juego. La idea principal de Satoshi era que la gente tuviera la posibilidad de coleccionar insectos en sus Game Boy y de utilizar el cable para intercambiarlos con sus amigos.

Satoshi vendió esa idea a Nintendo, pero les llevó 6 años completar el juego. La versión Verde llegó a las calles de Japón en 1996, y las ventas crecieron rápidamente. Se vendieron más de 4 millones de copias en el primer año (Nota: Ash, en Japón, se llamaba Satoshi, por su creador. Y su rival, Gary, se llamaba Shigeru, como el hombre que creo Super Mario Bros).

En 1997, se les pidió a Satoshi y al resto de los creadores de GameFreak una licencia para sacar una serie animada de Pokémon, Satoshi aceptó, pero forzó a los guionistas y animadores a jugar hasta el final, al juego del Game Boy, para que pudieran apreciar de que se trataba realmente. Luego de esto, los creadores de la serie hicieron una especie de novela basada en cosas que suceden en el juego.

En septiembre de 1998, las series animadas de Pokémon (producidas por 4 Kids Productions) se estrenaron en el canal Kids WB de E.E.U.U antes de que saliera la versión Roja y Azul del juego.

¿QUE ES UN POKÉMON?

 
 
Muchos de ustedes no conocen de que se trata todo esto de Pokemon... aquí hay material interesante para empezar a conocer más acerca de este fascinante mundo de Mascotas de Bolsillo:

"Los Pokemon son criaturas misteriosas que comparten el mundo con los seres humanos", dice el profesor Oak, la mayor autoridad en estos monstruos. La principal tarea de los entrenadores es capturar, entrenar y luchar con todos ellos.

Cada Pokemon tiene sus propias habilidades de lucha especiales. Aunque tienen muchas formas y tamaños, aún el Pokemon más pequeño puede lanzar un ataque feroz. Algunos Pokemon crecen, o evolucionan, transformándose en criaturas aún más poderosas.

El mundo de fantasía de Pokemon fue creado por dos empresas japonesas, Game Freak y Creatures, que, junto a Nintendo Co., Ltd pusieron en marcha la idea del primer videojuego de Pokemon.
Pokemon se puso a la venta en Japón a principios de 1996 con las dos primeras ediciones de este juego para la consola Game Boy de Nintendo. Rápidamente, varias empresas de diferentes sectores se interesaron por el mundo Pokemon y el potencial de dicho juego. Así, en torno a los juegos Pokemon empezaron a surgir revistas y cómics, serie de dibujos animados para TV, todo tipo de juguetes, actividades y promociones, películas cinematográficas, juego de cartas... Había nacido el Fenómeno Pokemon, y el éxito del mismo se trasladó en 1998 a EE.UU. y Australia, para llegar a Europa en 1999.

Fue tal la magnitud del Fenómeno Pokemon en Japón y EE.UU., que en ambos países se crearon los Pokemon Center, unas tiendas dedicadas exclusivamente a la venta de productos Pokemon. Actualmente, hay tres Pokemon Center en el mundo, situados en Osaka, Tokio, y Nueva York respectivamente. Los visitantes pueden jugar con los videojuegos Pokemon, así como intercambiar Pokemon con otros aficionados, disfrutar de espectáculos de luz y sonido y en general de todo tipo de actividades referentes al universo Pokemon.

El videojuego Pokemon para Game Boy, del que se han lanzado en España hasta seis ediciones diferentes, es una aventura RPG que ofrece al jugador, conocido como entrenador, la posibilidad de capturar distintas especies Pokemon para entrenarlos e intercambiarlos con otros jugadores Pokemon. Cada Pokemon representa una especie determinada que cuenta con sus propias características y habilidades, y el jugador podrá encontrarlos durante su recorrido por distintas ciudades y pueblos. El objetivo es coleccionar todas las especies Pokemon que incluya el juego y llegar a convertirse el mejor entrenador Pokemon.
También se han comercializado en nuestro país diferentes juegos Pokemon para otras consolas de Nintendo y hardware específicamente diseñado con elementos Pokemon.
